Every summer Bayreuth becomes the cultural center of Richard Wagner’s music. It is the Bayreuth Festival that made the city internationally known as well as the partaking singers, conductors, directors, and stage designers. When the fanfares are sounding for the beginning of the Richard Wagner Festival an international audience surges into the city and up the “Green Hill” for the Bayreuth Festival Theater which was especially built for this occasion. With its incomparable acoustics the theater captivates thousands of visitors year after year anew.
The festival starts on 25 July and runs until 28 August. With an ever-changing program every season 30 performances with about 2,000 spectators from all over the world take place. The 103rd edition of the Bayreuth Festival will start off on 25 July 2014 with the production of Richard Wagner’s opera “Tannhäuser”, directed by Sebastian Baumgarten under the musical direction of Axel Kober.
In the center of the upcoming Festival is also the production of Wagner’s Ring tetralogy “The Ring of the Nibelung” under the direction of Frank Castorf and the musical direction of Kirill Petrenko. Other highlights of the festival are the operas “Lohengrin” (director: Hans Neuenfels, musical director: Andris Nelsons) as well as “The Flying Dutchman”, produced by Jan Philipp Gloger (musical director: Christian Thielemann).
